A good and extra-clean German bassoon from the Wenzel Schreiber workshop, made in their workshop in Nauheim, West Germany.

Here’s the report, one piece at a time…

Bell is perfect, no cracks or damage. Still has the original bell-ring, not cracked or broken.  Original varnish is 100%, no wear to the nickel plate.  S51 stamped on the bell, below the Schreiber logo.14424 also stamped on the reverse side.

Long joint has 100% original varnish, no wood damage, both tenons are original and without damage or cracks. Both tenons wear original brass tenon caps.  Number 13621 stamped on the body.  No wear to the nickel plate.  All  new pads and corks.

Boot has 98% original finish, one minor worn spot (size of a dime) to the nickel plate.  No wood rot, both sockets are with original brass linings.  B tone-hole is ebonite lined.  All new pads and corks.  Number 14424 stamped on the body.  With hand-rest (crook).

Wing joint wears 98% original varnish, tone-holes ebonite lined.  Tenon is undamaged, has original brass tenon-cap.  No whisper-key lock, but we can fit a RH lock for no extra charge.  Lining is clean, no damage.  Range is to high C, no high D or E, but see my comments below. Number 13621 stamped on the body. All new pads and corks.

Two new Schreiber bocals, #KE-R2 and #KE-R1, both new.

New case from Protec.

Please note, info about Schreiber models:  This instrument was produced when Scheiber was part of Marty Tolchin’s empire that included a number of names, such as York, Buffet-Crampon, Paesold and others I’ve forgotten.  I hold, still, about 600 shares in “Buffet-Crampon”, later named “Tolchin Music”.  The company was absorbed by Boosey-Hawkes in 1990, has had several owners since. My shares are, alas, totally worthless.

We consider this bassoon as being "one small step above the entry-level instruments from Schreiber". It differs from the cheapest model by having tone-hole liners ("water tubes") brass liners to the two boot sockets and by having brass caps to the three tenons.  The cheaper Schreibers were often marked "Meinhart", sometimes "Conn", sometimes "Lyons Monarch".  It's confusing, as the differences were largely cosmetic.

If a client were to purchases this good and clean used bassoon it would later be a good candidate for key-additions.  To add high D and high E keywork would not be costly and would be done by our associates in modern-day Germany.  Yes, we’ve had the work done one many other bassoons.

Bottom line?  Good bassoon for a serious student or an adult amateur. It’s a good player and it’s not expensive.

*** Woodwind questions?  I love getting Emails from interesting musicians and I respond, always, to one an all.

Best regards from Wichita,
