A superb SELMER SUPER ACTION alto saxophone, made in France in 1952, serial #45,810
Long story…
Our small music shop’s been in business since 1953. I’ve been here since 1961, so I’ve got six decades of experience. My two adult sons plus a grandson work for us…plus a handful of other fine people.
We were originally a saxophone and clarinet repair shop. No sales, just repairs for the locals. That was the job I had for the first three or four years I was here. Today we’ve got five repair techs and the one who specializes on vintage flooties and pro-saxophones is my older son.
The SBA alto we’ve posted today is an instrument I’ve personally known for more than half a century. Not certain, think we sold it to the current owner, years ago. And I’ve known him since the mid 1960’s, when he was a clarinet and sax major at Wichita State University.
After graduation he taught band and orchestra at one of our local schools and was so successful in his efforts that a state college in Oklahoma hired him. After a superb career as a distinguished woodwind professor he’s now decided to take it easy and to pass one of his saxes to the next generation.
No, this one’s not a “closet queen”, but it’s just about the finest alto I’ve ever played. And I’ve played thousands (literally) of Selmer alto saxophones.
Made in the early part of 1952, exported to Selmer-USA that same year. Yes, it’s got American lacquer finish (about 60% still there, which means the original lacquer’s worn maybe 40%). Have a looky-looky at my poor photos and notice the key-pearls that show no wear at all…still sharp around the edges. I don’t recall that this one’s ever had any dent work or repairs other than pad replacement when needed.
Pads are a few years old, but have been seated correctly from our shop and are now covering beautifully. Check the photos of the thumb-rest, the bell engraving and the end-bow. Like I said, not in mint condition but an honest early fifties Selmer that’s a superb player.
Price includes and the present owner insists that the buyer of this beautiful lady correspond with him. Simply said, he wants to make sure this one is passed to a new owner who will treasure it and appreciate it for the rest of his / her lives.
HAPPY to send “on approval” for a few days of course. Contact us and we’ll tell you how to do it.
TOP TOP recommendation on this one. No jive!!!
*** Better than a new one? In OUR opinion, ABSOLUTELY!
