Vintage 1948 Martin Committee Trumpet w/ Case
A RARE VINTAGE TRUMPET FROM THE MARTIN MUSICAL INSTRUMENT COMPANY,
MADE IN ELKHART IN 1948.
This one’s special…. We acquired it last year from the grandson of the original 1948 owner. And I knew the original owner, myself, for more than 50 years.
Byron bought it from the Bennett Music Company, in Wichita. He was a local week-end musician, taught private lessons, had a few band classes in the suburban Wichita schools and was the director of Wichita’s “Million Dollar Shrine Band”, of which I was a member and still am.
Cliff was his brother and was also a buddy. Cliffy did repairs on wind instruments and, for one season, was the solo clarinet player with the Sousa Band. And Cliff worked at Benett Music, also.
Our Martin came to us in good mechanical condition, but with no lacquer, no finish of any kind. No patches, no thin spots, no replacement pieces.
And very important….the original pistons are perfect…dead perfect. As tight as when they were new and better than the pistons on ANY modern trumpet. Byron used valve oil and lots of it!
No bore-size stamped on the valve cluster. As I recall, in 1948 only one bore-size was offered. But if I’m wrong, I’m sure somebody will correct me.
So this beautiful and rare instrument, ( you know, like the one Miles used…) came to us looking a bit sad. Original but sad. A very light polish and two coats of Nikolas 2015 acrylic was sprayed. I’m rather proud of how it turned out, since I did the lacquer work myself.
Bottom line…superb player, all original, very tight valves. Not mint, but an honest and fine example. With a new case, even.
Serial #168,023. But you can see the numbers from my photos.

GR / EDR Wichita Band Instrument Co.
Wichita Band Instrument Company is a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA. The owners are Kansas natives Gary L. Ray and his two sons.
Founded by a woodwind repair technician in 1953, we soon will commence our seventy-fourth year in business.
We’re not a “back bedroom” operation but can report that we are the owners of a proper “brick and mortar” workshop.
We enjoy a sterling reputation for ethical business transactions and confirm to our friends and clients the simple fact that we expect to be in business forever.
Wichita Band’s service warranty is the same as it’s been for more than four decades:
“ALL new and all used instruments sold by Wichita Band Instrument Company come with our 24 month service warranty. It’s in addition to any factory guarantees. For two full years, we will repair or replace (whichever in our estimation is the more advisable), pads, corks, springs or other parts required, at no charge to the customer. In the event of cracked or damaged wood sections, we will repair at no cost to the customer or replace the section and charge the customer only for our net costs for the replacement section. Often, wood replacement parts are supplied from the manufacturer at no charge. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance charges. Cases and plating finishes are not covered by our service warranty but are sometimes covered by factory guarantees.”
Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953!
In the event that a customer requires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer.**** WICHITA BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY / WICHITA, KANSAS / USA
