According to the New Langwill Index: The Guichard musical instrument company was established in 1827 by A.G Guichard in Paris, making both handmade and cheaper mass produced brass instruments. In 1835 his brother in law P.L Gautrot joined the firm;by 1844 employed workforce of 210 using the firm. By 1844 the firm employed a workforce of 210 using assembly line methods. A notable patent of Guichard was of course the ophicleide: Patent: 1836 (F) #4936 (Jean Auguste Guichard aine): 'ophicleide a pistons', 1838.
Ophicleides are period instruments made of brass used in orchestras in the mid 19th century as a predecessor to the tuba. Example of wonderful Romantic orchestral works that call for ophicleide include Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Overture to Midsummer's Nights Dream by Felix Mendelssohn. This particular instrument is 9 foot in the key of Bb with 9 keys ; the bell is stamped "Guichard Breveté. A PARIS" . It is made of yellow brass and is in unlacquered finish. We believe this Ophicleide to made before the year 1850.
