A good and extra-clean German bassoon from the Wenzel Schreiber workshop, made in their workshop in Nauheim, West Germany.
Bell is perfect, no cracks or damage. New Schreiber bell-ring. Original varnish is 100%, no wear to the nickel plate.14209 also stamped on the reverse side.
Long joint has 100% original varnish, no wood damage, both tenons are original and without damage or cracks. Both tenons wear original brass tenon caps. Number 14209 stamped on the body. No wear to the nickel plate. All new pads and corks. Pin-sized ding next to body-lock, otherwise perfect.
Boot has 100% original finish, no worn spots to the nickel plate. No wood rot, both sockets are with original brass linings. All new pads and corks. Number 14209 stamped on the body. With hand-rest (crook).
Wing joint wears 98% original varnish, tone-holes unlined. Tenon is undamaged, has original brass tenon-cap. No whisper-key lock, but we can fit a RH lock for no extra charge. Bore is clean, no damage. Range is to high C, no high D or E, but see my comments below. Number 14209 stamped on the body. All new pads and corks.
Two new Schreiber bocals, #KE-R2 and #KE-R1, both new.

We consider this bassoon as being "one small step above the entry-level instruments from Schreiber". It differs from the cheapest model by having brass liners to the two boot sockets and by having brass caps to the three tenons. The cheaper Schreibers were often marked "Meinhart", sometimes the earliest model imported by "Conn", sometimes "Lyons Monarch". It's confusing, as the differences were largely cosmetic. Our bassoon was imported by Conn and bears their stamp on the bell. But it was made in 1970 and is a bit nicer than the earlier models.
If a client were to purchases this good and clean used bassoon it would later be a good candidate for key-additions. To add high D and high E keywork would not be costly and would be done by our associates in modern-day Germany. Yes, we’ve had the work done one many other bassoons.
Bottom line? Good bassoon for a serious student or an adult amateur. It’s a good player and it’s not expensive.
